Passage 7

In plain words

It is not man's nature to be content once he has achieved a single task. A person keeps rejoicing in the thought of achieving many, many more. Youth is fleeting. And man's youth slips away faster still. This youth arrives midway and departs midway. It is not a right trait for you to build up pride on the strength of such passing youth. Only when you honour the elders in society and the parents at home, and stand in the right way, will society too see your honour. Students! Honour and respect are not one way traffic. They are given and taken. Give, and then try to receive. But today's students are ready to receive, yet not at all ready to give. So every single student must cultivate humility and obedience. You must know humanness. You must understand the condition of the country too. We must develop the personality our country hopes for. Whatever our country is like, it is our motherland. When a person who cannot love his motherland shows longing for foreign countries, that is sheer madness. This has become a great weakness in today's students. Every student, whether a doctor or an engineer or whatever else he may be, sends his application to foreign countries the moment he passes. Serve in your motherland. Build up your honour in your motherland. Trust your motherland. How can one who cannot trust even his motherland trust other countries? Students must take the vow from the depth of the heart, 'I must sacrifice everything for my motherland.'

The craze for foreign lands. Dishonour.

They imagine they will go abroad and acquire great learning and come back. There is nothing they go there and acquire and bring back. They forget their very parents. What good comes of such ingrates going abroad to study? This is not merely the fault of the students alone. It is the government's fault too. By sending our students to foreign countries we are spoiling the honour of the country. With that feeling, we must try to cut down a great deal on passports for students. Are the studies you pursue not to be had in Bhārata? Are this science and technology not in our Bhārata? They say, 'We go abroad, learn and come back.' What they learn and bring back is lack of humility and lack of faith. They learn more show and bring that back.
