Passage 6

In plain words

Education is what is present everywhere and at all times. In the work of labourers, of farmers and of trade, too, education is most necessary. As long as life lasts there are many things to be learnt. So you must not think you are students merely because you have joined schools and colleges. However much you learn, while the unmanifest state that cannot recognise itself remains in man, all of this turns out simply useless.

Students! Make a fitting effort, all of you, to develop your sacred feelings. You must see that no trouble comes to your fellow man. So you must give your parents due happiness. Above all, gratitude is most necessary in students. First of all you must show gratitude to your parents. You extol 'Mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava.' Why should we honour these parents? Why should we show them gratitude? If you ask why we must love them: the blood in your body, the intelligence in your head, the food you eat, the money you enjoy; your blood, your head, your food, your money are your parents' gift. If you, who have received these four, cannot give them due gratitude, to whom else can you give it? Only when you give them gratitude does saying 'Mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava' become meaningful. What is the use of speaking words without practice? The day you enjoy peace in the home, the day you love the people in the home, that very day peace comes about in that house. What madness it is to want peace outside when there is no peace at home! Every man holds many meetings and conferences for the sake of peace, peace, peace.

With the atom bomb held in their hand they go on crying, 'Peace, peace!' though they can reach the moon, they cannot attain Śānti and happiness.

Śānti is within you; is it in the moon? Rather than travelling lakhs of miles through space, try to go half an inch into the depths of your heart.

Students! Your life is very sacred. Your age is more sacred still.
