In plain words
No other country can be found that has taught a principle of meaning so sacred and so vast. What great social justice this is! No such sacred path can be found in any other country. Though all religions taught such equality, the selfish, the self-seekers, unable to grasp this vast principle, set about quarrelling with nothing but narrow feelings. The one who has knowledge of the śāstras is not a paṇḍita. The one who has learned the authorities of the Vedas and śāstras, the itihāsas and purāṇas, is not a paṇḍita. The one who has gained scholarship is not a paṇḍita. The one who is skilled in languages is not a paṇḍita. "Paṇḍitāḥ samadarśinaḥ": only the one who has equal vision is the true paṇḍita. We must develop an equal vision towards all religions. We must not criticise any religion. We must not revile it. We must drink the nectar of Ānanda that is in every religion. That is why the essence of all religions is unity, and that itself is the principle of Prema. When we foster that principle of Prema, there is no room at all for hatred. Today people think religion is the cause of the quarrels, upheavals and hatreds that go on in the world. Religions are not the cause. Selfish minds alone are the cause of it.
How many there are in the world who, even while in one religion, have hated each other over differences of opinion! Now, Iran and Iraq are of one and the same religion. But why are they fighting? Among foreigners, three parts are Christians. Why do they fight among themselves? In Bhārata everyone lives simply as a Bhāratīya. It remains just the Bhāratīya religion. But why are they fighting? So, in short, when we go deep and inquire, religions are not the cause of this strife. Selfish minds alone are the cause of it. Wearing the burqa called religion, they stir up such upheavals to gain their own selfish ends.
Embodiments of Prema! When we wish to gain the peace that matters most in the world, we must not hate religions in the least. We must see that morality matters more than our community. Rather than religion, we must foster the growth of affection. So affection, equality and forbearance are essential for every human being. For the sake of name and fame they broke the rules of those founders of religions and went on following paths contrary to them. As time moved on, the influence of the men in the religions brought change, and they went on founding sects of every kind. This is only the path of personal selfishness; it is not the teaching of the founders of religions. We must sacrifice selfishness and self-interest. We must foster Prema, forbearance and sympathy. We must achieve a life of equality. Only then can we become those who wish for the peace of the nation and the welfare of the world, or who serve them.
