In plain words
That we have such a fine Vice-Chancellor is your great good fortune.
From the time our university began, Gokak, a great scholar and poet, a man of every kind of ability, was the first to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of our Institute. After him came Saraf, to give true service with Bhakti and surrender. From today Sampath, accomplished in the worldly, the physical, the spiritual and the scientific, takes up the post of Vc. We may think of these three as the form of a trinity for our university. They are men who took up the post with no desires, with no desire for position, in a spirit of sacrifice.
Students!
Vice-Chancellors “Come and go but Swami's Love Comes and Grows”. However many Vice-Chancellors change, the close bond between their Prema and Swami's Prema, between their hearts and Swami's heart, only grows; it does not change. The names on the chairs of ‘Vice-Chancellors’ may change, but their hearts can never change. That is why, since our Saraf is of this mind, we are not sending him away. Because he means to devote the whole “rest of his life” joyfully to Swami's service and to the service of society, we have decided to keep him in our ‘Central Trust’ and so keep a fitting bond with the University. So you need not worry in the least that Saraf will go away somewhere else. Both of them came seeking only Swami's support. So I hope that, like “Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa”, the two of them will bring fitting growth to this work.
Students must not run after selfish ends and their own advantage. Even beasts, birds and animals have a feeling free of selfishness. Among the educated today one sees broad feelings nowhere. Life is challenge. When you go out into the world you must face the views that stand against yours, win through, and grow in strength. To this end the teachers, the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar and the Controller in our institution are all giving you every encouragement. So students must try to take a firm vow. Students must show the world today what right learning and a right ideal are.
Students! I hope that you will honour your Vice-Chancellors, men of pure heart, as they should be honoured, take their guidance, and so rise to great heights; and blessing you, I bring My talk to a close.
