Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If peace is to be nourished in the family, peace must be grown in the individual. For this, man must keep down his bad feelings and work as he must to nourish the divine feelings within him. But man today wishes for a ‘long life’, not for a ‘divine life’. One must work as one should to live a ‘divine life’, not for a long life.

The water of the highest truth

Only when there is water do waves begin. Only when there are waves does foam form on them. There can be no foam without waves, and no waves without water. That is why, in the water called the pāramārthika, the waves called the vyavahārika begin, and on those waves comes the foam called the knowledge of dawn. It is this foam that they call the prātibhāsika. In the vyavahārika and in the prātibhāsika the water called the pāramārthika is the same. Whatever sweetness, lightness and taste the water has, that same nature of the water is in its waves and in its foam. Only when we experience the prātibhāsika and the pāramārthika as the same does this principle of Prema stay with us as evenness, steadiness, immortality, wholeness.

Life itself is a game

“Life is a game play it. Life is a dream realise it. Life is Love enjoy it”.

What we must fight today, what we must win, is the battle of life. That is a game. Today we think of … as Prema. That is only a notion, not true Prema. When this Prema has sprung up in our hearts, there is no room in it at all for unrest, sorrow, attachment or hatred. Where there are attachment, hatred and sorrows, we can decide for ourselves that there is no true Prema. That is why God is not so easily within our reach. Try to grow in yourselves the Prema of the heart.

Games and songs

You play games in the sports meet and sing songs. These began in ancient times. These games came about to foster, through games and songs, the unity of different faiths. Playing these games keeps the body healthy, strong and content. No one keeps discipline in these games. They want only to win. Games began for four things: joy, health, contentment and discipline. Songs came about to increase joy. That is why song springs up only at a time of joy. In the old days women gathered and sang with great joy the songs of the anointing, the songs of the auspicious lamp and the songs of giving away the bride. Today if you ask anyone to sing at a wedding, they ask, “How much will you pay?” Songs have turned into a trade. Students, all of you, recognise clearly that your games and your songs are not for money but for the joy of the heart, and make your lives grow full of joy.
