In plain words
So all four rest on a sound foundation. Only when the foundation is secure does our life gain happiness and peace.
Students! In this stage of learning you must understand your lives well and shape yourselves into ideal students. Education is most necessary today. Science and technology too are needed. Science is not bad. But wrong ways are creeping into the manner of its use. They are leading it down the wrong path. There is a knife in your hand. With this knife you may cut fruit, you may cut vegetables. But with that knife you may also cut another's throat. The fault is not the knife's. The fault is the person's who holds the knife. Science is just like that. So today it is science. Science. Without spirituality, science is blind. Without science, this spirituality is lame. That is why we must bring science and spirituality together into one, like negative and positive.
For happiness here, the learning that brings gold; for happiness hereafter, Brahmavidyā.
For this whole worldly life, science is needed to some extent. But we must keep setting a limit to this science too, so far and no further. In this science there is no mind and no Ātma at all. Only knowledge, knowledge. This is only empty gas. There is no use in it at all. We must have mind. Manayeva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ. It is from what is called the Manas that man got the name maniṣi. So the Manas must have the examination of the eternal and the passing, that is, discrimination power.
In the world today there are five kinds of knowledge. The very first is something everyone knows. This is bookish knowledge. It is everywhere. This bookish knowledge is turning into superficial knowledge. This bookish knowledge and superficial knowledge are in everyone. But general knowledge zero. This is the third. The fourth is discrimination knowledge. How are they using this discrimination knowledge? They discriminate to suit themselves. This is only individual discrimination. This is not right. Fundamental discrimination is needed. We need the discrimination that holds as true for you, for me, for all. Only when we discriminate in this way does practical knowledge come to us.
