In plain words
If we marry him off, good gifts will come. Dowry will come. With it we can build ourselves a house. Such are the hopes of today's mothers. We teach these little ones such lessons from their childhood.
The custom of the people of Bhārata is to begin the first lessons in letters when the child reaches five years. Om namaḥ śivāya: what becomes of these letters? Om becomes separate. It becomes namaśśivāya. It has become Om namaśśivāya. At the very start they taught the letters through the Name of God itself. To the children of today, Baba Black sheep. Look. Ding dong bell pussy is in the well. They teach children things that have no meaning. That all the children of today take this path is not their fault. It is the fault of the parents. The parents have been raising them in this way. When the sapling grows straight, the tree grows straight. If this sapling is crooked, the whole tree is crooked too. So mothers must take due care to raise the children of today into a fine, ideal life. All these things we must enquire into, to some extent, in the authority of the sacred Upaniṣads and Purāṇas that are the culture of Bhārata. I am not telling you of things that are somewhere else. I am telling you of things that are all in ourselves. Every power, every virtue, every holiness is in man himself, not outside. So make the right effort to bring forth those divine feelings.
