In plain words
But we think he is doing dhyāna absorbed in it. After a while, if a mosquito comes, he swats it at once. What dhyāna is he doing? Is he doing it on God? Is he doing it on the mosquito? If he were truly doing it on God alone, he would know nothing of this mosquito. So today japas, dhyānas, yogas and yajñas are all done in an artificial way, not in the heart. So the results too appear artificial. Yad bhāvaṃ tad bhavati. If we eat a mango, will we belch of cucumber? As the action is, so the result comes. This is a boon given by God. It is not. It is only the fruit you yourself have received, the fruit you yourself have willed. So we must not blame God at all. Your actions alone are the cause of your hardships and your happiness. It is most necessary that we recognise this truth and set our actions on the right path.
Students! In all these twelve days, with great Ānanda, you must try to recognise the principle of the Ātma, the form of Ānanda, and the right principle in all things, worldly, physical and spiritual. Days such as these are the important days. We keep saying it many times.
The day when all good devotees, saying "O God," make remembrance, sweet to the ears; the day when, with love, we put an end to all the griefs of the poor and live together like brothers; the day when, to the bands of servants who think of God, we serve rich food with love; the day when some great soul comes to us and, in friendship, tells the stories of God:
That alone is a day; all the others are days of mourning. The true days are these four alone. That is, the day we give joy to the lives of others, put them at ease and give them the happiness that fits is the true day. I hope, and I bless you, that you will spend days such as these as true days and shape a divine life … into a new life; I will not say that tomorrow at 9 o'clock the vow, the tapas, the sacrifice we began will be complete with tomorrow.
