In plain words
Though mothers-in-law beat them, though husbands sharpen their knives, they do not raise their voices, they do not grow angry, they go nowhere, they are not afraid, the Gopīs; like a picture in a book, Kṛṣṇa dwelt within them!
They did not change their minds at all. The husbands show their knives. The mothers-in-law beat their daughters-in-law. They have no eye at all for these sufferings. Why? ‘As print is struck on paper’, Kṛṣṇa was printed on that paper called the heart. No one can separate this print from the paper. That is why they are a home to courage, daring, joy and delight. Those on whose heart God is painted have no sorrows of any kind. No unrest of any kind comes near them. No grief of any kind touches them. They remain forever embodiments of Saccidānanda.
The soiled cloth called the heart must be dipped in the water called Prema, rubbed with the soap called sādhana, and beaten on the stone called Jñāna
We must not only make the Name of God dance on the tongue; we must make it enter into the heart. So we must sing bhajans. Through the vibration of this bhajan, the atmosphere becomes pure. Today sound, touch, form, taste, smell and the rest have all become polluted. We must purify these polluted five elements. How are we to do it? Let us take a small example. It is through sound that everything is created. As the fire that rises, so the smoke that comes. As the smoke, so the cloud it becomes. As the cloud, so the rain that falls. As the rain, so the crop that grows. As the crop, so the food we cook. As the food, so the life that is made for us. All the sounds we make turn into waves of electric energy. All these waves enter the air. We breathe this air every day. In this way we are breathing in air that is impure, soiled and polluted. So first of all we must purify the air.
