In plain words
Gold does the world no good at all. It may do some good to the rich, but to the poor it is of no use at all. So gold is not the value, diamond is not the value, land is not the value. Who tills these lands? The people do. Who buys diamonds? Human beings buy them. Who buys gold? Man buys it. Without man, gold has no value. Without man, a diamond has no value. Without man, even the land has no value. So: men are more valuable than all the wealth; man is very precious. We must find out that value. If we call ourselves man, think ourselves man, and live like dogs and jackals, how can our life be humanness? Tell Me.
We must take refuge in the divinity that makes humanness grow
We cannot develop humanness through this education. Day by day humanness is sinking lower; it is not growing. So we must take refuge in the divinity that makes humanness grow. Students! Swami is always in Ānanda! Swami has hoped for one thing only! I set My hope on this: that the students who pass out of this Institution would go out into the world and give it a fitting ideal, and through that the world would become much better. But since that hope has not been fulfilled enough, that itself is Swami's dissatisfaction. Other than that, Swami has no anger toward you, no displeasure with you at all. Swami's only pain is this: ‘These children are not able to rise as was hoped; what will become of their future; how many kinds of hardship will their future meet!’ When this MBA course was begun, I hoped very much: in every factory there are thousands of people; if our MBA boys go and join those factories, they can change any number of them. Students may boast outside, but how the MBA boys who went from here really are, I alone know.
