Passage 19

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

They only go about saying, ‘Manager here, manager there’; but till now no one has been given a manager's post, in any factory. What is the reason? They believed firmly that these boys had much spirituality in them. But when they actually went there, their conduct turned out to be of another kind. ‘This fellow is all gas. He may have learning, but he lacks humility and obedience enough,’ and so no one gives them a manager's work. Whatever anyone says, they behave with arrogance, saying ‘I know this’; they do not behave with humility and obedience. So they keep moving them from here to there and from there to here. They make only plans of a worldly kind. Wherever you go, if there is this one thing called Bhakti, it will take you forward any distance. Without it, however great you think you are, there is no result. There is no pettiness worse than that. There is no meanness worse than that. Use in your work the learning you studied too! There is nothing wrong in it. For example, they go to some spot in the factory. Some worker is working there at a machine. When this fellow goes and keeps asking that worker questions on all he has studied, wearying him, the man just smiles. ‘Sir! I have had experience on this machine for 20 years. You passed only yesterday and came here; what do you know, sir?’ he says. His is personal experience; yours is bookish knowledge. There, the two do not go together. More than this, students must recognise one more thing. The studies you study here and the jobs you go out and do have no connection at all. Our teachers too keep saying that this is great and that is great. All this is mere gas. They tell what they themselves have studied. But when it comes to working there, not one thing of it is of any use there. I too have looked into this a great deal. They call the clerks who have worked there a long time and hold meetings with them, but they do not bring into that meeting the new boy with our MBA pass. For this fellow passes his time in mere talk. You must work. Every boy who has passed, when he joins a factory, must study that whole factory thoroughly. He must learn every small job. So for some 6 months, in the factory you join, you must be a student.
