Passage 18

In plain words

Whatever we have kept hold of, that alone is ours. There are the Reserve Bank, the State Bank, the World Bank, all of them. Each has its own chairman. But in it there is not a single pie that is his own. All that is in the bank is in the cashier's hands. But all of it is the bank's money, not his. What is deposited in his own name, that alone is his. In the same way, however great the things we have heard, only what we have put into practice is our own. Not all that we have listened to is our own. So, only when we practise what we have listened to is there joy. Even if we do not practise everything, to practise at least one or two things and make life worthwhile is man's goal. We earn a great deal of money. We learn many kinds of learning. There is no fault in learning. There is no fault in money. But all the faults are in the person. When we develop a mind free of faults, all these come to be rightly used. How? We think money does a great deal of harm. We think learning causes harm. No, no, there is no fault in it at all. Water is pure. It is fine and sweet. But if you pour it into a red bottle, that water looks red. If you pour it into a black bottle, it looks black. Where did this colour come from? When it falls into the bottle called a person, it too turns bad. If we are in rajoguṇa, our money and learning go to waste as rajoguṇa itself. When we are sāttvic, our money, our learning and all our actions too enter the good path. So the bottle called our heart must be pure. With this very thing in view,

What use is worship of Śiva without purity of citta? Without purity of the self, what is that observance for? Without a clean vessel, what is that cooking for? this is the plain truth I am telling you.
