Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If we have no gratitude and turn ungrateful, with narrow feelings, even the results that come to us dwindle away. When there is so great a result even in worldly matters, how much greater still is the result in matters concerning God!

If you learn to take God's command upon your head, your life will be truly set right

Students! This is a life in which you know nothing, a life full of innocence. It is a life full of Ajñāna. It is a life full of nothing but desires. It is a life full of nothing but selfishness. It is a life that seeks its own gain. But even in this we must choose a holy life. That is: to take God's command upon our heads! If you follow that one thing well, your life, your family, your society, all of it will be set right. Dharmaja asked for the welfare of just one son of his stepmother, and the yakṣa brought all his brothers back to life for him. However wicked Duryodhana was, Karṇa went on showing him gratitude because he had done him a good turn. In this feeling of gratitude Karṇa was very great. An ideal man. ‘I must keep my word’: he took this great decision. Satya is the life-breath of a word. Without it, the word is a lifeless word! So first of all we must guard that life-breath, that is, Satya. When the word is lost, the man is as good as lost!

Whatever kind of help we have received from anyone, we must never forget that help in our life. Even if we do no good in return for it, that does not matter. It is enough to think once of the help others have done us; only do no harm! For selfish ends many set about doing harm in return for help. That brings great danger. For the moment you may find happiness. You may gain a passing joy. But later on a very dangerous situation arises.
