In plain words
Dās Gaṇu took off his boots and came. ‘What work have you in the world? From this day, stay right here,’ He said. ‘Swami! I have my duty. A promotion is coming to me,’ he said. ‘You want a promotion?’ He said. Dās Gaṇu: ‘I have worked for a long time. There is a chance of promotion,’ he said. ‘Then will you come after it comes?’ said Bābā. ‘I will surely come,’ said Dās Gaṇu. ‘Swear it; one word only. All right, go! I will send the order,’ said Bābā. As soon as his duty in Shirdi was over, Dās Gaṇu went to Kopargaon. Within a single week the promotion came. He went to Aurangabad. The promotion came, and he forgot his oath. Going about his own affairs, holding parties. Bābā sent Kulkarni to Dās Gaṇu. This Kulkarni used to go as envoy. Earlier too it was this same Kulkarni who went to bring Nānā. He went and said, ‘Dās Gaṇu! Swami is calling you.’ ‘Even though I forgot, Bābā has not forgotten!’ Dās Gaṇu grieved. ‘I am on duty. I will take leave and come. As long as I am in service, I must do my duty well, must I not?’ he said. ‘What did you say, Dās Gaṇu! You said you would come after the promotion came. It has been 6 months. You have made no effort to come here!’ Bābā questioned him. ‘Swami! It is power, after all! I want to enjoy it just once. I will come back after some time has passed,’ he said. ‘All right, go,’ said Bābā. He went. By the time he got there, a big inquiry had come up. What was it? Property that thieves had carried off had been recovered. They put it in the police station, that property. On the second day those goods were gone. Dās Gaṇu was in charge of the station! Where had they gone? Dās Gaṇu, poor man, was innocent. Even so, a warrant was out against him, on the ground that the responsibility was his. ‘I have lived so long, and when I hoped to win name and standing, has disgrace come to me?’ he grieved. Not asleep, not awake. In that state he was hearing Bābā's words. ‘Satan! Are you thinking it over now at least?’ Bābā asked. At everything He used to say, ‘Satan, Satan.’ Now I keep saying, ‘Buffalo, buffalo.’ Not only ‘Satan’; Bābā also used the word ‘Son’.
