Passage 15

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy: all these are the traits of beasts.

Eating, sleeping, fear and mating: in these men are the same as beasts; Jñāna is the special excellence of men; empty of Jñāna, they are equal to beasts.

We must call to mind the humanness that is in us. From the moment you rise at daybreak, it is not enough merely to pride yourself, ‘I am a man, I am a man.’ You think you are a man; but what kind of things do you do? You do the things a beast does. ‘I am a man’ is half the Satya. What is the second half of the Satya? ‘I am not a beast, I am a man. I am not a beast, I am a man’: so you must remind yourself every moment. Only when one puts these two together does one become a full human being. Every human being must make this kind of enquiry. What is the state of our country today? Only when the country is well can you be well, is it not so! Only when you change will society change. Only when society changes will you change. These two are inseparably bound, each resting on the other. First of all you must change. Having changed, you must try to change the country. How must you change? The principle of Prema alone is the basis for this. We must develop Prema. We must put away the old and foul qualities. We must develop new, inspiring, sacred and divine feelings. Only then will there be the chance for the country to progress in every way. Though our Prime Minister is in the midst of many problems today, he is trying to achieve what he can with courage, with faith in God and with moral strength. We too must help accordingly. God's help is there. Human help is needed too. God is like a thread. We must string all the flowers on it, must we not! Only then does the garland appear as one. The flowers are different, each different. The thread is one! Divinity is there. When all of you cooperate with one another, and the people of every state and the officers too cooperate with this and give a helping hand, Bhārata will come to any height of progress.
