Passage 14

In plain words

But if that sun's light fell directly on the earth, people could not live. So the layer called ozone stands in between and keeps the sun's rays from falling straight on the earth. The smoke and poisonous gases that men release in so many ways in daily life today all go up, and harm comes to that ozone layer. Lately there is a looming danger that holes will form in this ozone layer. As a result the sun's rays will fall directly on the earth, and in time a disaster will come about. What must we do to prevent this? We must grow more trees. When we grow trees, they take in some of the carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. Now the trees have all been laid waste. So all this polluted smoke goes up. And through it this ozone layer is being damaged. If this goes on like this, great danger will come to the earth. So what we must do now is this: not cut the trees that stand, plant new trees, and grow forests in the spirit of ‘Lokā ssamastā sukhino bhavantu,’ that all should be happy.

Students must strive to recognise the oneness in the many

Today, with crazy desires, we are growing a dense forest of Ajñāna. We are not growing the trees of broad feeling. That is expansion of Love. But against this, today it is all contraction of Love. All our love is personal and full of self-interest. Children must make a fitting effort to recognise the oneness in the many. You look to someone else for a thing only when you lack it, don't you? If you have the thing yourself, you will not look for it from another, will you? The five elements are within you. Why should you look for them from another? In you and there alike, the same five elements! All of them are within me. There is no need to look for it from others’: if you think in this way, desires lessen automatically.
