‘Sukhamāpyanti yattadbuddhi grāhyaṃ’: happiness is not something gained through the senses alone. The happiness experienced through the senses is impermanent and unreal. True happiness is permanent, Satya and everlasting. Man can gain it only from the Buddhi. This Buddhi is filled only with śraddhā and with unwavering firmness. All the pleasures man experiences in daily life come only from the objects of the senses! The pleasure of sense objects is nothing but a poisonous pleasure, not the happiness of nectar. Sense objects always try to bind man; they do not urge him on to make his humanness worthwhile. So all the pleasures man experiences belong to the senses, not to the Buddhi. What humanness must seek is the happiness of Satya, eternal happiness. This is possible for us only through the Buddhi. All the pleasures we long for in our humanness today are gone in a moment. They are like mirages. However long one enjoys pleasures such as these, they do not give satisfaction. With the resolve to experience lasting satisfaction, we must inquire. The Taittirīya Upaniṣad has described and explained this Buddhi in many ways, and has gone on teaching these matters.
