Passage 16

In plain words

It is not these celebrations that matter to us. For us, it is not outward garb that matters. It is not languages that matter. Feeling is what matters. Without this purity of feeling we cannot gain purity of Jñāna. Take the steps needed for purity of citta. Love all. But you must not let this Prema take a selfish form. Believe that the divinity in all is one. We must take part in the service of society without ceasing. I have said, ‘Service of the village is service of Rāma.’ When you do this service of the village, it turns into service of Rāma itself. To think only of building a temple to Rāma is a great mistake! In so great and vast a land as Bhārata, what do we gain by building a temple to Rāma in some one place? Each one must turn his own heart into a temple of Rāma. We must believe that our Bhārata itself is Rāma's kingdom. What does Rāma's kingdom mean? Rāma's kingdom is not some one particular Dharma. The blending of these three, thought, conduct and character, is itself Rāma's kingdom! That is ‘Manasyekam, vacasyekam, karmaṇyekam mahātmanam.’ Today there is no unity, no purity, and still less divinity. People merely cling to community. This is not man's chief duty. When we divide society in this way, we do harm to humanness itself. If we would foster humanness, we must foster unity.

He who does not trust God does not trust himself!

What does the culture of Bhārata mean? It does not belong to any one particular country. It belongs to all countries! Countries may differ, times may differ, duties may differ. But man's conduct must be one and the same. If we are to rise from where we stand to a higher level, we must first of all improve our conduct. If the very ground under our feet keeps shifting, how can we reach a higher level? If the foundation stones themselves are moving, how can we build a steady house? Our conduct is our foundation; our actions are our support.
