Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

It is the one with a narrow heart who criticises others. More than that, to give them their right name, it is the mean who set about criticising others. No one should be criticised. If you come to know that what someone did is wrong, go to him yourself and tell him, ‘What you did is wrong.’ If it is not possible to say it that way, see that you yourself do not make such mistakes! Other than that, no one in this world has the right to criticise another. What good is the person who criticises able to do?

When you want to set others right, you must first rid yourself of your own evil feelings

Today all the great leaders waste their time in criticism alone, but when you inquire through this what kind of people they are, it turns out that they are all base. Abusing others is the greatest sin of all. Truly, it is those with a narrow mind who criticise others. Increase your own goodness! Share your own goodness! But you must not blame others at all. You must make the effort to blame yourself. Among young people today such evil feelings, evil plans and evil qualities are growing beyond measure. They keep their own selfishness and their own advantage as their aim, but neither the welfare of society, nor a feeling for God, nor a divine heart is to be seen in them at all. If his wish is fulfilled, he is pleased. If it is not fulfilled, he abuses others. Not only others: he abuses even the Paramātma. That is not right. In the young people of today there must be a sacred foundation. ‘For what was I born? Only to eat, drink, roam about and die? No, no: I have come to give an ideal life. I must take part in the service of society. I must support others in my society in the right way. My welfare lies in society’: this is what one must firmly resolve. Every individual must step forward to serve society.
