Passage 14

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Whatever he studies, he is only thinking how much salary will come, but the feeling, ‘How much work can I give to society, how much good can I do for society?’, is to be seen in no student. One must think what good is coming from me to the world and to society. One must not think how much will come to me from society. Those who keep asking how much will come from society are utterly selfish. That is why the Veda said, ‘Not by action, not by offspring, not by wealth: by sacrifice alone have some attained immortality.’

Money is the root cause of all today's quarrels

Boys! Girls! Wherever you go, whatever work you do, in whatever house you live, you must make the effort needed to give an ideal life to that household, to that society and to your mother and father. For students, the chief thing is discipline. It is not enough to have that discipline only while you are in college, only while you are in the hostel. Just as our shadow follows us wherever we go, discipline must be with us wherever we go. Next, duty. Do your duty sincerely. Only then will joy come to your heart. You are earning a great deal of money. But I will warn you how loss comes from doing too little work. Money has come, as much as you want. It gets spent in one way or another. Illnesses in the house may multiply. Because of the illnesses, people pay money to the doctor. Or else thieves carry it off. Or fire may burn up the money. Or again the government may take it as tax. Some, afraid of what may happen to their money if they keep it at home, give it to some friend. In the end you have no courage to ask, and he has no wish to give it back. That is the end of it. Only as much as you have toiled for comes into your hand; all the rest goes to waste by some road or other. There is a holy place called Kāḷahasti in Andhra Pradesh. You know it. In that Kāḷahasti there is a river called Suvarṇamukhī.
