Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The sun seems gentle now, and the days have grown short; the cold wind sharpens its bite; in the fields, by the dim moonlight of night, the farmers threshing the heaps lift their voices and begin to sing their songs; yellow flowers string pearls along the hemp fields; scattering a vermilion gleam over the ripe chillies, opening wide the faces of the marigolds, setting the wealth of grain in our homes, the lovely month of Puṣya has come; the lovely festival of Sankrānti has come.

All the festivals of Bhārata are wonderful mansions of joy, full of inner feeling and inner meaning; they are not mere show to look at. Every festival has an inner meaning and a wonderful special quality, and it keeps bringing a joy that comes with changes in the physical world. Every month the sun enters one sign of the zodiac. In twelve months it enters the twelve signs. Of these, four signs are the chief ones. The first is Makara Saṅkramaṇa, the second Karkāṭaka Saṅkramaṇa, the third Tulā Saṅkramaṇa, the fourth Meṣa Saṅkramaṇa. Of these four the chief one is Makara Saṅkramaṇa.
