Passage 12

In plain words

You hear nothing. Programmes are going on at the Madras radio station. Switch it on and tune it. Set the station and the volume, and the very same thing comes. That song is heard here. How long does it take to come from Madras to here? Even as they sing there, it comes here in a moment. Where did all this come from? There are waves. Electric waves. That is what we called radiance. That is the form of God.

Know the difference between concentration and dhyāna

You do not know this yet, my dear ones! Many of you will have learnt it in science. Waves are coming from Madras. Waves are coming from Ceylon. Waves are coming from Delhi. However many waves come, each stays separate from the others. This is the secret of God's power. It is subtle. Everything is clear. When is it not clear? When you cannot tune properly, what comes is not news but nuisance. Tune to the correct station and the correct news comes. This is what was called ‘dhyāna’. That is, the body is a radio, the mind a plug. When you sit in dhyāna, all kinds of thoughts you never had keep coming. It leaves its place and goes off to the market, this mind. What is the reason? You are not concentrating properly. Concentration is very important. Without concentration, the whole of life goes to waste. Walking, thinking, talking, eating, writing: all of them rest in concentration. Everything needs concentration. So you need not take time out for dhyāna and waste your time. It is a way of life. But you must make the effort for meditation. Children must know the difference between meditation and concentration. There is a rose plant. It has many branches. It has flowers. Every flower has a thorn too. Once, you looked at the whole of it. You saw the rose plant. When you want to pluck a flower, you must push aside the branches, the twigs, everything. Your thought must go to that flower alone. Below the flower there is a thorn. You must avoid that thorn and pluck the flower.
