In plain words
The milk turns black, but the coal does not turn white. What must we understand? How did it become coal? It became so through the refining of fire. Put it back into the fire. Burning and burning in this fire, at last even the charcoal turns white. Burning halfway made it charcoal. Burnt fully, it became light. So if there is part time devotion, it stays charcoal. When it is Full time, it is light. Put it in the fire. Cast it into Prema; burning and burning, it becomes like dust, and when you blow, phoo, it flies away. There is a stick of wood. Let go, it falls down. But burn it to ash and blow, phoo, and it goes up. The more light it is, the more height it reaches. The heavier it is, the deeper it sinks. If you want to rise to a high level: less luggage more comfort. You must keep reducing your luggage. We must reduce our desires step by step. Merely reducing desires is not enough.
Bad qualities such as attachment and hatred and envy must above all grow less. For desire, anger and greed are enemies. Desires destroy Bhakti. Anger destroys Jñāna. Greed destroys our karma itself. These three destroy karma, upāsana and Jñāna. When anger comes, there is no discrimination at all. It breeds enmity. The power to weigh where, when and how one should speak is lost. So this anger must not come to us; greed must not be there at all. Even the disease cancer may be cured, but these three diseases are not cured. When are they cured? When put into the fire of divine Prema, they are burnt to ash. Even good hard iron, put into fire, melts and turns liquid. Do you see? Iron itself melts that way. Will these qualities of ours not melt? First of all we must destroy our bad qualities. To destroy them, there is no need for meditation or anything. Many people are doing meditation. What meditation is that? Decoration meditation. They sit. When a photo is being taken, they say, ‘I am doing meditation.’ Sitting like that is not it. Every act done in the body is only routine, not true. Do it in the mind, and they all become true.
