Discipline is a vital breath of life for every living being. And for man discipline is like the backbone. Without discipline human life itself is uprooted. Discipline means following a good rule. Without any rules humanness cannot stand. Na śreyo niyamaṃ vinā: without a rule there is no good. This discipline is not something read in books. Nor is it something heard from teachers. You must cultivate this discipline in daily life, in an orderly way, in your own duty. From the moment you rise at dawn till you lie down at night, at all times, this discipline is essential.

It is very much needed for every society, for every community, and in politics. Without this discipline a society is no society at all. Without this discipline politics is no politics at all. Without discipline a community is no community at all. Without discipline a nation is no nation at all. Between one person and another, between the individual and society, between one society and another, this discipline brings unity. So discipline is the chief mark of life.

In play, in song and in speech this discipline is essential. You must keep discipline without fail. You sing bhajans. When you sing bhajans, even though there are some who sing the chorus, all must follow it at one pitch. When each voice goes one way and each note another, it is not pleasant even to hear. So in singing, the chorus is the discipline.
