Passage 5

In plain words

You go,' he said. 'Will you really do it?' the son asked firmly. 'Will you do the pūjā to Baba as I told you? Will you offer naivedya to Baba? Will you take that naivedya? Give me your word. I will go to Shirdi; if not, I won't go,' he said. Seeing the boy's resolve, the father's heart melted. 'How noble is one who keeps such discipline! Though I have come to such an age, I do not have this discipline,' he thought, and grieved. He gave his son his word that he would do it. The son and the mother went. As he had promised his son, the father did the pūjā properly. Placing the sugar candy there as the son had done, and eating it as prasād again at mealtime: so it went on. On the third day came Thursday. Urgent work came up at the court. He bathed and did the pūjā, and ate his breakfast. He put on his dress and went to the office, and came back for his meal. After he sat down to his meal, he told the cook to bring the prasād. The cook said, 'In your hurry to go, you did not make the offering.' He was deeply grieved. 'I have broken the word I gave my son!' His grief was not that he had not offered naivedya to Baba. That he had broken the promise he gave his son: that was his grief. The next day Tarkhad's wife and son came to make namaskāra. 'Son, yesterday I went to Bandra. But there no one gave Me food. I did not get the sugar candy you give Me every day. I was very hungry. I came back. If you give Me something now, that is enough,' Baba said, asking the boy. It was like a shock to the boy. He went home and sat crying in his mother's lap. 'Father gave his word, but he did not offer the naivedya. That is why Baba came back disappointed. Mother, I will not stay here. I will not break my discipline. I will go back to Bandra.' As he said this, Baba sent word. Through whom did He send word? Through a man named Jog. Jog was always with Baba. He sent word to the boy. 'You need not go now. Your father broke his word, but you did not break yours. So My grace is abundant. You need not go. Stay as long as you like.'

But all that time he passed his days somewhat disappointed and unhappy. After ten days he came back here.
