Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

was Draupadī. Draupadī was in the form of fire. Draupadī kept her senses under control. Because such noble wives were born in the land of Bhārata, the culture of this land of Bhārata kept showing itself in many ways. From time without beginning.

In any time of hardship whatever, we must take up patience and set about living our lives in Śānti. From time without beginning, forbearance has stood as the heart of every man. Śānti is the beauty of the great sages. Through losing forbearance, great sages who had done tapas for many years fell from their state. Kings of kings lost their kingdoms for want of forbearance. Through losing forbearance, scholars kept falling. We must regard forbearance as our protection in all things. It is a great armour for us. Putting on such a safe armour, we take on worldly pleasure, transient and impermanent, and, unable to bear it, we fall prey to many sufferings.

Students! Forbearance is a most important quality. Keep your patience, whatever the circumstances. Do not act in haste. Haste makes waste, waste makes worry. So do not be in a hurry. Do not rush. Bear things calmly. With calm you can achieve anything at all. ‘Without calm there is no happiness, be it for the calm man or the Vedāntin, O lotus-petal-eyed One!’ Where there is no calm, there is no happiness. So we must hold to this calm. That very calm is our protection. We must not be hasty. Besides, hot blood flows in students. So students need forbearance. To face tests we must keep patience. However much abuse others hurl, we must take it patiently. If we too say something because they have said something, we become people who have wasted our precious forbearance. Their words may be petty and worthless. But our forbearance is most precious. We must not give this ruby away for such sooty charcoal. Forbearance is a ruby. However many kinds of slander others heap on us, we must not flinch in the least.

Today, for lack of patience, we are wasting life itself. Anger flares up every moment. Anger is a great sin. But some people, even while praying to God, use many words in anger with those beside them. Suppose a lady is sitting beside you in bhajan. She does not give up a little room. But she bears it with great difficulty.
