Passage 8

In plain words

Sacrifice is the very form of God. We must set about such sacrifice. What kind of sacrifice? Sacrifice free of self-interest. For the welfare of society we must be ready for any kind of sacrifice. If the learning we have studied is of no use to society, what is our learning for? Rāvaṇa studied a great deal of learning. Rāvaṇa's learning turned into indigestion. What was the reason? He did not put it into practice. Rāma studied only half the learning. The learning Rāma studied He kept putting into practice. He gained health. What is that health? It is plenty, fame and honour, and a life that is an ideal. For the sake of society Rāma kept pouring out all His powers. Rāvaṇa used all his learning for selfish ends. This was for the sake of others; that was for self. What is for others is the real truth. What is for self is disaster. Rāvaṇa's learning became the cause of disaster. Rāma's learning gave a place to truth. From that day to this, Rāma's fame shines brilliantly. If the Rāmāyaṇa has stayed so alive for so many thousands of years, we must recognise its sacredness. It is not sacred in the histories alone. It has gone on making the hearts of all sacred. What is History? HIS STORY is HISTORY. That is Rāma's story.

The educated must use that learning for society and try to set the people in society on the right path. We must bring learning into what is for the good of the world. Education must be Vijñāna. Good qualities must blossom in learning. This is the chief thing. We must seek the good of the world. This is the chief thing. Good qualities must grow in us. Without these, what is the use of studying? One must certainly study. One must certainly take a job for a living. We must use learning in helping others. Character is greater than learning. Today we are selling learning for money. It has set out as a field of trade. Learning is not a thing to be sold. Nor a thing to be begged for. Learning is a thing to be shared. A thing shared with one another. In sharing, it grows of its own accord.

Students! There is nothing wrong in your taking a job after you have studied. But along with the job we must seek the well-being of society. We must keep the welfare of society in view.
