In plain words
A man who has attachment to the world: what use are all the sādhanas he does! Then Ubhaya Bhāratī spoke to the sannyāsī. In many ways she taught him that "for one who has given up everything, this attachment, this possessiveness and Ahaṅkāra are not good". Then the sannyāsī fell at her feet and gave his word that from that day he would give up this Ahaṅkāra and possessiveness and live as one who has renounced every attachment.
In the same way, every man thinks he is making sacrifices, but what has he sacrificed? What is sacrifice?
Not leaving property and wife to go off to the forest; giving up bad feelings in your feeling: that becomes sacrifice; that itself becomes yoga.
Many people make sacrifices in worldly acts. This is not sacrifice. We must sacrifice the bad qualities in us. We must sacrifice bad feelings. We must sacrifice wicked Ahaṅkāra. We must sacrifice bad habits. This is true sacrifice. To leave house and home and go away is very easy indeed. It is no great hardship. But we must sacrifice the bad qualities that trouble us and in many ways show us the wrong path. People in the world speak of the nine planets. It is not the nine planets that trouble us. There are just two planets. The two planets called rāga and dveṣa. These planets called rāga and dveṣa seize man and torment him in many ways. Give up these two, and Śānti comes under our control. For Śānti there is no need to do any separate, special sādhanas. We must carry out the duties we have to do. You are a householder. Carry out your Dharma as a householder. You are brahmacārīs. Carry out this principle of brahmacarya. In this way each one, following the Dharma of his own āśrama and engaged in sacred contemplation of God, can make his time fully worthwhile.
But the condition of the world today is stranger still. When anyone speaks of good things, sacred things, ideal things, these do not reach their ears. When someone speaks bad words, two ears are not enough. He even tries to take everyone's ears to listen!
