Passage 5

In plain words

They have been calling them desire, anger and greed. The Rāmāyaṇa is desire. You may wonder why they call so sacred a story desire. It may seem strange. The root cause of the Rāmāyaṇa is Rāvaṇa's desire itself. The whole Rāmāyaṇa is Rāvaṇa's wickedness. Desire is the very Rāvaṇa of the Rāmāyaṇa. Rāvaṇa, who had every power, fell prey to a petty craving and lost his kingdom, his kinsmen, his all. Anger means the Bhāgavatam. Hiraṇyakaśipu and Hiraṇyākṣa were angry with God. Because he nursed anger against God, Hiraṇyakaśipu, with no discernment at all of before and after, lost everything. The Bhāgavatam is the story of Hiraṇyakaśipu. Hiraṇyakaśipu would burn with rage when anyone said Hari. Without any kindness or consideration he kept torturing his own son. Anger loses the sense of discrimination. What became of him in the very end? He fell into infamy of every kind and was ruined. Hiraṇyakaśipu was the one who had brought the five elements under his hand. What use was all he gained? He could not win any victory at all. Next, greed. Duryodhana, full of avarice, met defeat in every way and lost his hundred brothers. They kept nursing hatred against the Pāṇḍavas, embodiments of Dharma, and against Kṛṣṇa. He pretended to have faith in Kṛṣṇa, but he had no faith. What was the reason? That He was on the side of the Pāṇḍavas. Duryodhana kept nursing hatred against Kṛṣṇa. The three of them were haters of God. Desire, anger and greed, the three of them, are haters of God. The doors to the sacred Supreme Principle stay shut forever. These three alone are the worst enemies of Mokṣa. What is this Mokṣa? Mokṣa is nothing but the waning of moha. If we reduce our own moha, that itself is Mokṣa for us.

Once Nārada put a question to Viṣṇu. ‘Swami! For Your darśan I keep coming to wherever You are. At times some very urgent work comes up. If I want to see You, where is Your head office?’ he asked. ‘Is it Vaikuṇṭha, Kailāsa or Svarga?’ he asked. Then Viṣṇu: ‘Nārada! Write down the address. Madbhaktaḥ yatra gāyanti tatra tiṣṭhāmi Nārada. Vaikuṇṭha, Kailāsa and Svarga are branch offices. My head office: wherever My dear devotee is remembering Me, there I am installed. In the other places I am the festival image!’ He said tiṣṭhāmi; he did not say vasāmi.
