Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Then we have to separate the outer husk from the paddy. Only after this husk is removed do the grains become rice. Only after it has been refined by fire can we eat it. In the same way, silver, gold or diamond: we cannot enjoy any of them just as it came into being. All these are mixed with earth. We have to clean them and, by refining them in fire, make them pure to some extent. Only then can we make anything out of it. So everything has its refining. Here is this cloth. Its source is cotton. In that cotton there are seeds and who knows what else. We have to make that cotton into thread. Only when the thread is woven does it become cloth. For this cloth to be made, many refinings must take place. Only then can we enjoy many experiences. All the studies you pursue today are mere bookish knowledge. There must also be the refinement that belongs to education. However much you may study, learning without refinement is no learning at all.

However much he may study, whatever his station, the mean man does not give up his bad qualities; study searchingly as he may, it comes only to argument, and full Jñāna he never attains.

Having studied in this way, we go in for argument and dispute. This is not the worth of education. Learning is not pursued merely to fill the belly. Toil is for food. Education is for Vijñāna. We have set this on the wrong path and think that education is only for earning a livelihood.

In life there are two paths. One is a livelihood. The second is the supreme goal of life. Along with a livelihood, we must recognise the supreme goal of life as well. We may live somehow as long as we are here, and die in the end. This is not man's main aim. We must hold out an ideal life to everyone. Every single human being must become an example. Even if the man dies, his ideals must not change. You must grow into students who hold out the highest ideals. These ideals are not things that change. They are of an undying nature. Birth after birth, others can follow these ideals in many ways.
