Not only here: wherever you go, there too you must make the Sai principle known. You must spread it and teach it in the form of practice. The discipline, behaviour and manners you have learnt here must go with you like your shadow. I keep saying: one whose behaviour is right is a boy. One who has good manners is a man. One who does great duty is a devotee. But if you push duty aside and worship a picture, will that be Bhakti? Duty is God. Work is worship. We must not become like idlers. You must study the lessons that belong to your class. In the rest of the time you must play games. You must sing songs. You must do smaraṇa. You must experience joy. The food you eat is food for the body. The bhajan you sing is food for the mind. You are putting fine paints only on the cart. You are decorating it. But there are the horses that pull it. That is the mind. You are not giving food to the horse. What use is decorating? A decorated cart can be put in a museum, that is all. First of all you must give the horse good strength. That is the strength fit for the mind. What is it? Good qualities, good thoughts, good reflections, good conduct. You must supply such things, all joined with the letter 'sa'.
But unfortunately, for Arjuna, who had joined the war, 'mine, mine' began. What does 'mine' mean? These are my people. These are my uncles. These are my sons. That is why despondency grew. Kṛṣṇa said: Before the war you came as a great hero. By the time the war came, you had turned pitiful. Before the war Kṛṣṇa took the chariot and placed it in the middle. He joined his hands. 'How shall I bear to kill so many teachers, sons and friends!' He lamented. 'Fie, fie! What is this? Why did you send the embassy before?' He told Kṛṣṇa:
Narrow-minded, the Kauravas: will they turn from their grudge and make common cause with us? Like scattering jasmine flowers into fire, before brutes Your kindly words: are they any use? O treasury of virtues, why these words of peace now, Gopāla? Will the north and south poles meet? Without saying the war is ready, why this delay any longer?
And that is what you said then!
