Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Then, dayāsakhi. Who is the sister? We think of only the sister by the body as our sister. No, no. Compassion itself is our sister. Śāntaṃ patni. Husband and wife alike: both are Śānti! Without Śānti the world itself cannot go on. Śānti is the jewel that shines in splendour on every human being. Śānti itself is God. So Satya, Jñāna, Dharma and Śānti are all forms of God! Forbearance is our son. This is not something that simply comes to everyone. Under the sway of the Kali age, the sons of today covet the property their father earned, but there is no one to keep either the father's aim or the father's Satya. Rāma was the one who followed His father's command, His father's word and His father's ideals to the letter, who never went back on the word He had given, who gave up every comfort and went into the forest, and so honoured His father's word. That is why ‘Rāmo vigrahavān dharmaḥ’. Rāma too is a form of God! Forbearance is a form of God! These six are the true kin of everyone.

Human birth has come to us so that we may keep human values

Satya, Jñāna, Dharma, compassion, Śānti and forbearance: all these are our true kin. Humanness has come to us so that we may keep this kinship. These human values we have forgotten today. We live with our eyes fixed on histories that began yesterday or today. The ancient histories we have forgotten. Man today, from the moment he rises at dawn till he lies down at night, is forever wasting away in worries and sorrows. What is the reason? It is simply that we have forgotten our ancient culture! Today we are living a modern culture. It lasts only a moment. Students must recognise this and take a firm vow to keep human values. What we must love today, what we must aspire to today, what we must earn today, is not the wealth of learning. We must earn the quality called ‘Prema’. The Vice-Chancellor said that you must become soldiers.
