In plain words
As long as he has wealth, he goes about defying even the Lord of Kailāsa. That is not it: character itself is our wealth. These material riches keep changing a great deal. Today your father has sent you 500 rupees by money order. While you hold that 500-rupee note in your hand and rejoice, that 500-rupee note looks at your face and laughs, it seems! ‘You crazy fellow! By evening I am going into someone else's hand. I will not stay with you for ever. I have seen many faces like this. I am going to see many more. So I am not one to stay,’ it says, it seems! Does money stay in one place? Like water under your feet, it keeps flowing away. But the wealth of grace, the wealth of Prema, the wealth of blessing, the wealth of grace, once it comes, it does not go back. You must earn this. Through the fruit of birth after birth, this chance has come to you now. You may use the wealth that has come from your Past life, but even today you must make the effort to increase it. You may spend it, thinking, ‘The ten thousand rupees my father earned are with me.’ But how long will these ten thousand rupees last? When the ten thousand rupees are gone, you become a beggar. So you must keep your father's earnings of ten thousand by you, and use your own earnings. This is what they said in the Bhagavad Gītā: ‘Kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti.’ As the fruit of karma wanes, this too wanes. A small example. A student stood in an election. He won it. He went to the Assembly. He sat in the Assembly hall. He became an MLA. For how long? 5 years. Year by year it kept dwindling. When the 5 years are over, he simply has to come back home! He cannot sit in the Assembly. It is over. He must again earn the people's regard to some extent. This gain came through the merit of past births. Even now, you must develop the sacred feelings that increase that gain. Then that past and present join, and it becomes a ++ for the future.
