Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must lead your life in a sacred way in this birth. You must surely strengthen the Prema and the grace you have received. Only then will the gain of it come to us.

Human birth has come only for freedom from birth!

Students! However many degrees you take, however much study you do, whatever jobs you hold, however much money you earn, none of it is lasting. The one thing you must earn is a good name. Having been given a human birth, you give it its meaning only by earning a good name. If you keep on doing wrong all the time, when will you ever get free of this? There was a thief. He would steal, and go and sit in jail. He killed someone and robbed. They took him off and put him in jail: 3 years' rigorous punishment. The 3 years went by. The jail officer came: ‘My dear fellow! Your term is over. We are releasing you tomorrow. Get your bags and baggage ready,’ he said. This fellow folds his hands and says, ‘Sir! I shall be back again tomorrow or the day after, shall I not? Let these stay right here,’ he said. What does that mean? His intention was, ‘I shall steal again.’ What use is there in doing anything for such a man? Once we have gone to jail, we must see that we do not go to jail again. What do we take medicines for? If anyone asks, people say it is to cure illness. That is not the right answer. Why are you taking medicine? You take medicine so that you need not take medicine. That is the right answer. People say it is to cure illness. That medicine may cure that illness. A new illness may come. Then you will have to take another medicine! We take medicine so that no illness at all comes any more. Why has birth come? So that birth does not come again. That is the right answer. Why do you go for an examination? You go so that you need not go for an examination again. Is it for this, to go for the examination and fail, go for the examination and fail? No: you must not have to go for the examination again. We must recognise an answer like this and try to act on it well.
