Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Brahman is not prāṇa. He did tapas. He came back thinking, ‘Manas itself is Brahman.’ Again the father said, ‘This is not correct. It is not right. There is Manas, but without the power of inquiry, what is the use of having Manas? You may eat lentils, you may eat earth. You need the Jñāna of discernment, do you not? A madman has Manas. But with whom to speak and how, where to go: he knows nothing at all,’ so he taught him. True! Manas is not Brahman. Once more he went. He did tapas. He came. ‘Father, Prajñāna is Brahman,’ he said. ‘Prajñāna is Brahman’: true! Yet, though Prajñāna is there, no kind of fruit is coming to us from it. There are very great scientists. Ever so many men of Prajñāna there are. There are men of Vijñāna, men of true Jñāna, men of Prajñāna. But for all of them, behind it, the thing called Ajñāna keeps following. That too is not the complete Brahman,’ said Varuṇa. He went back and sat in tapas. He did not get up. He did not come home. Immersed in that Ānanda, he was rejoicing greatly within himself. The father waited three or four days, a month. The son did not come home. The father went. The son remained in one and the same Ānanda. ‘Son! Have you come to know?’ the father asked. ‘Ānanda is Brahman,’ he said. He had examined these five kośas: annamaya, prāṇamaya, manomaya, vijñānamaya, ānandamaya. When Ānanda came, he thought, ‘Now I need nothing more.’ All sādhanas are done for the sake of Ānanda! But the joys we experience now are momentary. These are not Ānanda. That is eternal Ānanda, the Ānanda of yoga, supreme Ānanda, the Ānanda of Advaita, Sat-Cit-Ānanda, the Ānanda of the Ātma. Except through God alone, we cannot gain it at all through anything else.

Man's Resolve Has Sunk to a Low Level

God, the Creator, resolved: ‘Man will examine the five kośas and enter Ānanda, the last kośa; for that purpose I must create this man.’
