Passage 5

In plain words

So what is the cause of this joy and sorrow? This scene of Prakṛti alone is the cause. What is the cause of this scene of Prakṛti? The waking state alone is the cause. In the state of sleep there is no Manas, no world, and no joy or sorrow either. Only when there is Manas is there a world. Only when there is a world is there joy and sorrow. How is that Manas to be merged? As sugar spreads all through pānakam, so must Prema arise in this world conjured up out of what is seen. Nowhere does the eye see a place without Prema, or a world without Ānanda. What is everywhere is Ānanda alone! What pervades all is Prema alone!

The principle of Prema is present in all living beings

Without Prema, without humanness, life itself cannot be. I have told you this before. The Mahābhārata war is going on. It is going on most terribly. Vyāsa is coming to look upon it. Midway along the road a little worm is running very fast. Vyāsa, the knower of the three times, stopped his chariot. He gave it the power of Prajñāna. ‘O worm! Why are you running away like this? What danger is coming upon you?’ he asked. ‘O great lord! The Mahābhārata war is raging most fearfully. In a few moments Arjuna's chariot will come along this road. No one can say how great the speed of his chariot is. Before that chariot comes, I am hurrying off to save my own life,’ it said. Even worms and insects and their kind look to saving their lives. Not men alone. Even worms and insects and their kind want to be safe and well. Not men alone. Every living being has the longing to experience happiness, to experience Ānanda, to be filled with complete contentment. That is the principle of Prema. That Prema is present in all living beings. What is this Prema like?
