Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We think we are learning something. We think we have learnt something. We think we are very intelligent. Those who are truly intelligent do not think that way. Only the one without intelligence thinks, ‘I am a great genius.’

Human birth is most exalted, gifted with goodness and fine character

Only on the day we develop love for God will our life shine greatly in this world. Man must make himself a model in everything. Above all, in this world we must understand the Ātmatattva. This Ātmatattva is itself the svarūpa of every man! Give up your attachment to the body and enter into attachment to the Ātma; Ānanda will come to you. In the world there are three kinds of creatures. Some creatures move about always in the water alone. Some live on the bank. Some live both in the water and on the bank. In the same way there are some great souls, men of merit, who spend their time always in contemplation of the Ātma alone. But some, while leading a worldly life, enter the spiritual life and spend their lives partly this way and partly that. One foot in Prakṛti and one foot in the spiritual: some others are like that. The spiritual itself does not agree with them. They cannot catch its fragrance at all. For the cold called deep Ajñāna has seized them. To such people the sweet fragrance does not come within experience. So they live as believers, unbelievers, and believing unbelievers. Jogī, bairāgī, virāgī: in this way they live in many forms. But above all, this divine humanness has been granted to us. It is not granted to everyone in every birth. By what great good fortune this humanness has been granted! So, ‘Jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabhaṃ’: human birth is most exalted, most gracious, most virtuous. There are even fools who sell this ruby of humanness for charcoal.
