Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

That is why they said mankind. We must set about taking the meaning in each word in the right way and using it on the proper path.

Prema Alone Makes the Whole World One!

Students! Within you there are as many precious things as you could need. Those precious things are inside.

This body is a worthless iron box; as one puts jewels in a box, the Ātma principle is there in the body....

In this iron safe people keep their valuables inside; do they keep them on top? It is inside that box that all the valuables are. Compassion, Prema, patience, sympathy: all the precious things are there. All these are there: diamond, cat's-eye, emerald, ruby, hessonite, topaz, pearl, coral, all such things. Keeping such precious things inside, we go searching merely like the pearl shells thrown up outside. See what a lesson the ocean teaches! It keeps the precious pearls within itself. It pushes the snail shells out. What you find outside is only shells! The pearls are not to be found there. You must dive inside and bring them up. Only when we labour in that way do we find pearls. That is what Mīrā said: ‘O Kṛṣṇa! With great labour, in the deep ocean, I have won a pearl. That pearl is the Name, ‘Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa!’ Only do not let that pearl slip from my hand and fall back again. I have no refuge but You.’ Such yearning, such anguish, must begin in the devotee's heart. Only then can that man live as a complete man. Otherwise he is a man in form, but not a man in conduct.

Like seeing silk-cotton pods and mistaking them for mangoes, like seeing the look of wild cane and chewing it, taking it for sugarcane, like seeing the look of a pretty stone and chewing it, taking it for sugar candy: do not be deceived by the look of a thing; character is your true form.
