Passage 10

In plain words

He came wanting to win many hundreds of acres. But now six feet are all he needs,’ they said. For running after such greed, what a sorry end befell him at the last! There must be a limit to our desires. If there is no limit, danger follows. That is why Śaṅkara taught everyone: ‘Do not, do not thirst for wealth, O man.’ As soon as students pass, they set out at once for visas and passports. They must go to Iran, Iraq, America, Switzerland, the Gulf countries.

What is not in Bhārata is in no other country

Students! Mark this well. ‘Enna bhārate tanna bhārata.’ What is not in Bhārata is in no other country. For everything, Bhārata is like a guru. Many people come to such a Bhārata and go. What a land of karma Bhārata is, what a holy land, what a land of tyāga, what a land of yoga! Here, however little you earn, you can live in Śānti.

With great learning and a petty nature, what is the fruit of it, what is his worth? Why ten acres of land that yields no crop? A little good land is enough.

Even a little is enough. In this travel abroad we are spending a great deal of time, of action, of the body. What you eat is Bhārata's food, what you drink is Bhārata's water, where you live is on the soil of Bhārata. Where you were born is Bhārata. Your name is Bhāratīya. With all this, you leave this Bhārata and go off to some country or other, and what is it you come back having earned? Give up greed. Do service in your motherland. In this sacred Bhārata there are the helpless and the poor. Serve them. Along with your own good, recognise the good of others. We must begin our studies with the welfare of society in view.
