Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The traits of animals will fall away.

Without purity of thought, word and deed, the attainment of Jñāna does not come

You need not do any sādhanas. You need not do japa. You need not do tapas. Everything lies in inquiry itself. First of all there must be inquiry. What does inquiry mean? What is Satya? What is Asatya? What is right? What is wrong? Only when we examine these two can we travel on the true path. We have been born as human beings. This human birth is a birth that has come as the fruit of the merit of many births. If such a human birth comes and we go without using it in the right way, what use is it that a human birth has come? However many births there may be, it must be a human birth that comes. We have come once; that is enough. We must not long to come back a second time. A small example. Today a newspaper has come into your hands. You read the newspaper right through, from beginning to end. Will you read the same newspaper tomorrow too? No. Today's newspaper is tomorrow's waste paper. You want tomorrow's paper. In just the same way: reading what has been read, eating what has been eaten. If it goes like this, how is a birth fulfilled? ‘Punarapi jananaṃ punarapi maraṇaṃ’: is this what we always want? ‘Punarjanma na vidyate’: we must bring it about that there is none. That is what the pūjās, the japa and the tapas are for. We have been born. A fortunate birth. A great gift, received after gathering up so much fruit of merit. We must not waste such a birth. Even if we get only a little time, let us use it in worthwhile work. They long for the feet, do pāda-pūjā, and hope to attain Divinity. The moment you keep the feet with you, you must think that the Paramātma is there with you. You leave your sandals outside and come in. The sandals are one thing; you are another. But God's feet are not like that. He never leaves them anywhere, at any time. If the feet are in the pūjā room, it is as though God is in the pūjā room! You must keep that sacred, lofty feeling in mind, that eternally true feeling.
