Passage 7

In plain words

When we make investigations of this kind carefully, in every single thing there is selfishness, selfishness. Selfishness there must be! But even that must have a limit. Man today changes when he enters society outside. As long as he is in the institutions he looks very virtuous. By the time he enters the world outside, there this good turns to bad.

Whatever Kind of People You Join, That Very Form the Manas Takes

Students! Wherever you may be, enter into satsaṅga. Cultivate good feelings. Do good deeds. Live in good conduct. Only then does humanness gain its true value. Whatever kind of people you join, that very form the Manas takes. Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are. What kind of person you are can be told from your company. Out in the world join good company, speak good words, do good deeds and lead a good life. All the students are very good indeed! But through the fault of association the student's Manas becomes impure. The dust on the ground, when it joins the wind, flies up as far as the sky. It has no wings to fly with. When it joins water, the dust sinks down into the pit. It has no legs to go down, no wings to fly up. But through the fault of association it goes up and comes down. Students must recognise this truth well and guard their lives with the greatest care. ‘Sarvaloka hite ratāḥ’: we must live in a way that does good to all the worlds. In all things, knowledge must stay in balance. Good qualities must grow in students. Only when we fill ourselves with these good qualities does the whole of life shine well. Today's world is not unknown to you. It is full of unrest of many kinds, and of fear and confusion. What is the reason for this? Underlying everything, yet unseen by us, is selfishness itself! This is the root cause. We must not let go of Satya. Satya is our very life.
