Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

They eat it in a hurry. But going back to their own place, the stall, they chew the cud again and again and digest it well. In the same way, you have heard in a hurry here. Back in your own place, you must reflect and digest it. Only then will the strength of this food give you puṣṭi. This very puṣṭi gives santuṣṭi. So you need have no doubt about anything. Strengthen your faith in God. Make your service grow. Through service, life becomes worthwhile. You must regard these words as sacred maxims. You must bring up ten more people. If each person goes on bringing up ten, how much the whole country will improve! Each one must go on doing plus plus. Only then will the whole world become one. Only then will the feeling of one Ātma settle over all.

Live well, with a good name and good deeds

Young men! I may be putting you to a great deal of strain every day. But for your sake I will bear any amount of strain. It is enough if you become better. If you become better and make society better, that itself is joy. When you go to serve in the villages, do not spend lavishly and wear yourselves out. You must have the work done by those villagers themselves, explain the matter of the organisation to them, and set about developing that village through them alone. But for this service you must not cause trouble at home and go. Make your parents happy, and then go to service. Some children say, ‘Swami! Our parents will not send us to service.’ Speak to your parents nicely. ‘Father! Has this body come just to eat and sit around? We must serve the many. This body has come for the sake of helping others. You must do it too’: if you say this nicely to your father too, he too will come to some sense. If you tell them with good words in that way, they too will understand. Otherwise they wonder what you are doing, going off like a gang of ten, and they have their doubts. So behave as you told them. Behave well outside too. Then your parents will rejoice. Joy is not when sons are born. When a son is born, we hand out sweets. But that is not joy.

A father's joy in his son is not born when the son is born; when people see the son and praise him, on that day he gains that joy, O wise one!

When society sees that son and praises him, then the father gains joy in his son. When good renown comes in society, the father is happy. When the son earns a good name, there is joy. Earn a good name. Do good deeds. Live well. This alone is Swami's wish. For four days you have behaved well. You have been good. At times there is emotional excitement too. You must cool it down a little. If you control it, you will be truly ideal beings. Cut down your words. Recognise the truth to some extent. Increase your purity. Live life joyfully. Nothing in life is happy. It comes for the moment. It goes for the moment. All is passing clouds. But permanent happiness lies only in divinity alone. This is heart to heart, love to love. You must develop this very thing. This is the proof of your true devotion and surrender. Swami's blessings are boundless. Blessing you that you may live happily, peacefully and joyfully, with devotion and surrender, and render proper service to the country, I bring My discourse to a close.
