Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

He was born from Viṣṇu's navel. Because He pervades all, He was called Ātmaḥ. ‘Ātmaḥ’ has one meaning: day. Day means daytime: that which has driven darkness away; that is light. ‘Tamasomā jyotirgamaya’: Viṣṇu means the One who removes darkness and grants Jñāna. It is this culture of Bhārata that has given many such divine teachings of Jñāna. Today no one has the wish either to recognise or to protect the culture of Bhārata, which holds such divine ideas. People think that meditating on God, doing japa and worshipping Him: these alone are what matter. They cannot recognise the truth of why we are doing these pūjās, japas and meditations. Man cannot recognise what his own goal is. Unable to know the goal, not knowing the path that reaches it, however much one does, all of it goes to waste. The goal of everything is the principle of Prema alone. We must attain Prema. Only then do we gain the fruit. In no situation must we give up Prema, nor change our Prema; we must experience Prema. Where there is Prema, hatred does not arise. Where there is Prema, hardship does not befall. Where there is Prema, sorrow does not enter. So we must recognise this principle of Prema and live by it. The root, the goal and the aim of all sādhanas is Prema alone. Man must develop this principle of Prema. Only then does humanness find its meaning.

Jñānād eva tu kaivalyam

Many years have gone by. Our age is growing; our feeling is waning, it is not growing. Feeling must grow. Purity of feeling is purity of Jñāna. Without purity of feeling, purity of Jñāna does not come to us. ‘Jñānād eva tu kaivalyam’: only when such Jñāna comes to us is Kaivalya attained. In the world man has performed karma in many ways. He has earned wealth. He has received fame and honour. He has become a great rich man. But however much he earned, he could not find out what the goal of his life is. What is the reason for this? Not examining the unity in the multiplicity, people see unity as diversity. The great souls who saw the unity in the multiplicity are very few.
