Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Happiness and sorrow are the fruits of karma

There is a postman. He goes from house to house and hands over all the letters that have come for the people there. In one house, when he hands over a letter, they burst out weeping. In another house, when he hands over a letter, they rejoice. Is the postman the cause of their weeping, or of these people's joy? No, no. The news in the letter that came to them is the cause of their sorrow and of their joy. In the same way, God, like the postman, hands men their happiness and their sorrows. So if we want to attain sacred births, we must go on doing sacred karma. If the good and the bad in the world are to change, a change must come in man. Only when the conduct of the individual is set right will the condition of society be set right. The children recited just now: ‘Saha nāv avatu, saha nau bhunaktu, saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai …’ That is:

Together, as one, let us go about; together, as one, let us grow; together, as one, let us build up wealth and friendship, strength and virtue; together, as one, let us nourish the understanding we have gained; together, as one, let us live as friends, with plenty; “Śānti, Śānti, Śānti,” let us say, and offer worship to Śānti.

God is ever the embodiment of Prema

Only when there is no turmoil in us does understanding dawn in us. So when men give no room to any discord, let no unrest into the heart, and live together as one with Prema, they can be at peace. God is ever the embodiment of Prema. It is His own Prema that He spreads through the whole world. Viśvam: ‘viś’ means the world. ‘Va’ means entering. He who has entered the universe is God. Viṣ + ṇuḥ = Viṣṇuḥ: ‘viṣ’ means the world, ‘ṇuḥ’ means making it pervade. He who has made Himself pervade the whole world is ‘Viṣṇuḥ’. Viṣṇu is the form of the cause; the universe is the form of the effect. This world is the form of cause and effect together. Without the universe there is no Viṣṇu. Without Viṣṇu there is no universe. The oneness of the two is this world. That is why it was called the Ātma. What is the Ātma? That itself is Brahman, they said. Where did this Brahman come from?
