Passage 9

In plain words

Impermanent, joyless. This may be hard for many. While we live a worldly life we have to go through all these things, don't we! “Swami talks like this; what will become of all the children?” But it is at a tender age, while they are young, that good feelings must be put inside them. Start early, drive slowly, reach safely. Good feelings must be given to them within this age. If you hold back from giving them good feelings because they will find it hard, they will be ruined. What use is weeping afterwards? We must take great care from the very start. Nothing else has the sacredness that humanness has. Look: they dressed up as a lion and danced. The whole form was a lion, but the one dancing inside was a man; so what matters is the humanness, not the form. In the same way our body has a human form. The form does not matter. Practice matters. That is human quality. If you are human and have no human quality, what use is it? Develop human values. What are these human values? Good vision, good speech, good thought, good deeds, good life: this is human life. Only then do you become a complete human being. Even if you are forever doing some contemplation of God, there is no use in that either. You are contemplating. What use is contemplating? Are you putting it into practice to match? No. When you do not, what use is any amount of contemplation? If you merely contemplate “Rām Rām, Sāī Sāī”, a tape recorder too contemplates “Sāī Sāī”. Is there any use in that? The Name you say must take root in the heart. Then good feelings arise from the heart. They grow into trees. They give themselves to us as fruit. Without the tree there is no fruit. Good feelings are the trees in our heart. Good feelings must be born in a heart alone; they cannot be born anywhere else. For that there must be a seed. When anyone asks where trees are born, people say they are born in the earth. This is not the truth. It is untruth: a word spoken in ignorance.
