In plain words
The one who asks a question is the lesser. So you ask the question because you want to know. You are the lesser. I who answer it am the greater. Give me your dress. You put on my dress. I will sit on your throne. Sit below like me and put the question," said the cowherd. "Very well," they said. They put the king's dress on the cowherd. They seated him on the throne. The king sat below. The cowherd seated on the throne asks: "Great king! Ask your question," he said. The king asked: "What is the work God does in the world?" The cowherd gave a fine answer. "He makes the pauper a millionaire. He makes the millionaire a pauper. Till now I was a pauper. Now I am the king. You are sitting as a pauper, with a blanket over your shoulder. This is the work God does." That is, He makes the rich poor and the poor rich. Well, that struck his mind to some extent. The second question: "Whom does God look at? On whom does the glance of His grace fall?" He showed a lamp. "Great king, this lamp is burning. If you note which way it is looking, it is looking in every direction. So God, whose form is light, looks in every direction. He does not look in one direction only." This satisfied the great king. Then he put the third. At the third question the cowherd hesitated a little. He thought, "What sort of question will the king put?" The king asked the cowherd with great respect, calling him "Swami": "Swami! I wish to ask the third question," he said. "Where does God live?" He brought milk in a cup. "Can you tell where the butter is in this milk?" the cowherd said to the king. "In this milk the butter is in every drop, in every atom," said the king. "So God is everywhere," said the cowherd. "But then I should be able to see Him, shouldn't I?" If you want to see it, what must you do with the milk? You must boil the milk. Having boiled it, you must add a starter and make curd. You must churn the curd. While you churn, the butter comes up. In the same way, though God is everywhere, only when you install Him in your heart, heat it with Bhakti and surrender, add the starter called divinity and churn it with sādhana, does the butter called the vision of God come.
