Passage 15

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The great king was satisfied. Then he gave this man half the kingdom: "In daily life, the one who answers such holy questions is the true scholar. Though you are a simple man, you are very great," he said. Greatness is not in having learning. To answer with faith in your own understanding is true greatness.

Service that seeks no reward is true service

Today, however learned a man is, he does not understand what positive and negative mean. That is, whatever has entered the mind is negative. That at the sight of which the mind turns back is positive. Whatever the mind is drawn to is negative. But even when that negative draws you, enter into it without seeking a reward, and surely it too becomes positive. You are a doctor. You have to see that patient. You do not see him for some return. See him with the aim that the patient's suffering should be relieved. That becomes positive. So pass as a doctor, give medicines, whatever you do: if it is to become positive, you must take care to seek no reward. When you struggle for a reward, it turns negative. Do not wait at all for the result. What is your result? That the suffering of those who suffer is relieved. That becomes positive. In the world, from the small student to the great scholar, to carry out the duty one must do in daily life is the true positive. You must get rid of the personality. You must make your own divinity shine. Man today cannot recognise even the humanness that is in man. How then can he recognise the divinity that is in humanness? One who cannot know even the humanness in himself, how can he know the divinity in himself? First recognise the human quality in you. Then the divine quality will surely be known. Today people live with a negative nature. They must come to a positive nature.
