In plain words
As much as they sing, so much must they change their feelings. Along with the tunes, the feeling of the heart must grow. If there is no good feeling in the heart, however well and grandly you sing outwardly, I do not like to hear it. If you make the heart good, however you sing it is a joy to me. If you purify the heart, rāga and tāla come of themselves. Kabīr said once, "Rāma, I cannot practise yoga. I cannot do dhyāna. I cannot do japa. By what way am I to reach You? This body made of the five elements is full of many diseases. Because of it I cannot reach You. I have only one thing with me. With it there is no escape for You. With it I will tie You up. What do You think it is? I have the noose of Prema. I will tie You up with that rope called Prema," he said. At that very moment Rāma appeared. "My son! I am caught only by Prema. That is the rope I want." With that rope of Prema anything can be achieved. Hold on to Prema. Develop Prema. Become full of Prema. Become Prema itself. That becomes a life full of Prema. When you sing songs, do not think at all that the rāga and tāla are going wrong. Keep Prema within and sing the song, and it will come to the right śruti. Try it. If you try without Prema, it comes out only out of tune. Do it with Prema. Śruti, laya and tāla all fall into place.
