“Who are one's relatives? Who are one's own?” When you enquire, everyone is one's very own. So in all alike there is the principle of the one Ātma. So if we recognise this principle of the Ātma, all are our very own relatives. But we do not recognise the ‘Atmic principles’ at all, and people are falling prey to nothing but a body-attachment that says ‘I and my own’.
Everything happens by God's decree alone
There is a small example of this. Everything goes on happening only by God's prompting, only by God's command, only by God's will. An elderly man is travelling by train, taking his children with him. But he told the children: “I have taken all your tickets, every one. I have kept them with me. Wherever a station comes, you must not get off there. Get off only at the place where I get off. Mind this carefully.” Having said this, he travels on in the train. But these children, all of them, look about wherever a station comes. They look at the fruits and things to be seen there. “If we get off there, we can take all of them, can't we! We can eat them, can't we!” they long. But keeping the orders their father had given, none of them got off. However long it took, the father did not get off. The children grew tired. But at some stations they tried to get off. The eldest of them spoke up. “As Father ordered, we cannot get off unless he gets off,” he said. “Father has the ticket. If we get off without a ticket on us, we will land in great trouble. So we must not get off,” and he held them back. That is to say, what meaning lies in this? God Himself is the Father. Every human being is none other than His child. He is travelling on the train called life. God has said: The Father: “None of you must get off wherever you please. You must get off only by My command, only after I have got off,” He decreed. But no one at all is bowing to this decree. Each behaves as he himself pleases. But He has kept the ticket with Him. That is exactly why so many hardships come upon us.
