In plain words
In the same way, the sight of our eye takes in only as much as its sight can bear. If sight goes beyond measure, the retina burns. We must set a limit for everything. ‘There is no good without discipline.’ We must live life by a discipline. Sacrifice comes only with discipline. Only then does it become yoga. Without sacrifice, it turns into disease. Sacrifice is most essential. For sacrifice, yoga itself is the chief thing. What is yoga? ‘Yogaḥ cittavṛtti nirodhakaḥ.’ Yoga is precisely the restraint of the movements of the citta. We must take up yoga such as this, golden ones. You may do japa, you may do dhyāna, you may do all of it. Whatever you do, do service.
Not tapas, not holy waters, not the śāstras, not japa can lift you from the ocean of saṃsāra; only serving the good.
Service to the Village Is Itself Service to Rāma
Ānanda lies within this service. On a certain occasion, Hanumān met Vibhīṣaṇa. Vibhīṣaṇa was grieving deeply. “Hanumān, how fortunate you are! You have gained Rāma's presence. For ten years I have been remembering Rāma's Name. That presence of Rāma has not come to me,” he said. Then Hanumān said: “Vibhīṣaṇa! Do you know who I am? I am what they name the birthplace of fickleness. Rāma has drawn even one like me into His presence. What is the reason? Merely remembering Rāma is of no use. You must serve Rāma.” Remembrance is negative, service is positive. Only through the oneness of these two, negative and positive, do we see the light called divinity. You must serve, and you must remember. Only when you attain oneness in the two does the vision of Advaita come.
Embodiments of Prema! Foster Prema. Develop unity. Do service to society. Service to society alone is what is worthwhile. You are doing Bāla Vikās. You are doing all kinds of other service too. If you do not do selfless service, it is of no use.
